  2. Work stress: causes and solutions to reduce stress at work.

Stress at work. Everyone experiences it from time to time. As long as it does not occur regularly, it is nothing to worry about. However, if you suffer from work-related stress often or even on a daily basis, it is important to do something about it. Determine the causes and look for solutions that will reduce work stress. That way, you will enjoy your work again!

What causes stress at work?

Excessive workload

The most obvious cause of work stress is an excessive workload. You don't know how you will get all the work done in time. This powerlessness often leads to stress.

Personal circumstances

Stress at work is usually not caused by work alone. It often involves a combination of work and personal circumstances such as:

  • Caring for young children

  • Informal care

  • A busy social life

  • Personal problems

  • Poor health

Your work is not fulfilling

If your job doesn’t satisfy you, the likelihood of work stress is much higher. People who enjoy their work are happy with a well-filled calendar. If that is not the case, a full calendar can soon become overwhelming.

Other causes of work stress include:

  • Setting the bar too high (perfectionism)

  • Conflict or mutual tension at work

  • Lack of clarity about your responsibilities

  • Too little appreciation (focus on mistakes rather than successes)

  • Too much or too little autonomy

  • No opportunity for further development

How can you reduce work stress?

You have more control over the situation than you might think. Dealing with stress at work sometimes requires nothing more than a good talk or clear planning. Our tips to reduce work stress:

1. Talk about it

Talk with friends and family, but certainly also with your manager. If your manager does not know you are experiencing stress, they cannot help you. A good conversation, for example, could result in you getting support in your job.

2. Set your boundaries

When your calendar is full, you simply can't add anything more. If you are faced with a priority rush job, something else will need to be rescheduled. Discuss that with your manager. Together, you will come up with a good, stress-free solution.

3. Get your rest

Time for yourself is essential, especially if you have a busy job. These 10 de-stressing tips will really give you peace of mind.

4. Make a good schedule

Having a huge to-do list can be quite stressful, especially if you don't know if you will get it all done. You might not mind having a full (not too tight) schedule sometimes. But if that is not the case, see tips 1 and 2.

5. Focus on the positive

Making mistakes is human. Unfortunately, focusing on them is also human. Take time to dwell on your successes. In addition, try not to dwell too long on your mistakes. Learn from them and do things differently next time. That's all you have to do.
